Sustainability by design, not by accident!

Sustainability has escaped the clutches of academics and social activists and now regularly appears in newspapers and political speeches. Its meaning is not clear! It includes the paradoxical position that future development will require radically new technologies and ways of understanding humanness. In this session, Luiz Rielli (ICS-Ulisboa) aimed to stimulate a richer discussion around sustainability and how reflection allows us to design and redesign our lives.

What paths for car-free cities?

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a necessary condition for mitigating the rise in global temperatures. The transport sector has an essential role in this goal, but the predominance of the automobile continues despite advertising campaigns. The reflection presented framed this debate in the theory of practices, discussing its use in mobility issues.

Globalização, bananas e justiça socioambiental

Founded on February 23, 1988, in Portugal, Oikos - Cooperation and Development is a non-profit association, internationally recognised as a Non-Governmental Organization for Development, with active action in several countries in Africa and Latin America.
With an engaging and participatory approach (role-playing), the Guest Speaker (José Luis Monteiro/ Oikos) sought to make clear the North/South injustices that result from unequal, unfair value chains that perpetuate social and environmental imbalances.

Just adaptation and water

Carla Gomes (ICS-Ulisboa) presented some results and reflections from her present project research. Dilemmas and challenges of sustainability include water and hydric resource constraints. Who bears the burden of climate change and its effects on water supply? Environmental problems like that may create injustices and generate environmental problems (e.g., mass displacements and resource depredation). On the other hand, solutions may also produce new environmental and social problems – trade-offs (e.g. creation of natural reservations, REDD, production of biofuels, renewable energy).

Environmental Disasters: Brazilian experiences

Luiz Carlo Lourenço, a retired professor from the University of Brasilia, presented the Brazilian case regarding the environmental risks and disasters that have been jeopardising the quality of life of the populations of many Brazilian cities and towns in recent years.

The guest chose an approach that emphasises the role and function of society’s formal (norms, rules, laws and Organisations) and informal (practices, habits, traditions, ties) institutions to explain a set of well-known disasters (e.g., Brumadinho, Mariana, Amazonia fires)
