Week 4 Tuesday

28 Novembro 2023, 08:30 Maile Colbert

review:

Basic components (M1.3) The audio project

Organization of a project: Stems (groupings). Usual Stems: Voices, Ambience/Effects, Music.

Mixing lanes and pathways. Master fader; groups/subgroups, busses. Effects and inserts.

Case studies: organizing audio projects in Reaper.

Basic components (M1.3) The audio project (cont.).

Application exercise: Continuation of the previous exercise; transfer of initial projects to the chosen DAW and project organization according to indicated methodologies.

Creation of different versions containing different environments, effects and music, proposing different atmospheres through the added elements.

Observation of the implications of the choices of added elements; place and function of music and sound design.

The electroacoustic chain and stages of sound creation: post-production - processing of sound signals - dynamic and spectral treatments.

Week 5 Monday

27 Novembro 2023, 18:30 Maile Colbert

Basic components (M1.3) Acoustic and psychoacoustical elements. Incidences of perception in sound treatment.

Elements of acoustics and psychoacoustics:

Hearing aid operation.

Representation of sound signals, waves, sonograms and spectrograms. Frequency, Amplitude and their perceptual correlates (pitch and loudness). Harmonics of a sound.

Perception strategies: Fletcher-Munson curves, importance of timing of attacks, vibrato and the presence of harmonics and their impact on the perception of sounds. Notion of virtual fundamental.

Sound is vibration that is perceived and becomes known through its materiality.

Metaphors for sound construct perceptual conditions of hearing

and shape the territories and boundaries of sound in social life. Sound

resides in this feedback loop of materiality and metaphor, infusing words

with a diverse spectrum of meanings and interpretations. To engage

sound as the interrelation of materiality and metaphor is to show how

deeply the apparently separate i elds of perception and discourse are entwined

in everyday experiences and understandings of sound, and how

far they extend across physical, philosophical, and cultural contexts.

-Keywords in Sound, ed. David Novak and Matt Sakakeeny

Week 5 Tuesday

21 Novembro 2023, 14:00 Maile Colbert

Recording equipment workshops

In the class Google Drive, you will now see the addition of a document with links to tutorials covering the plug-ins we have gone over so far. I will continue to update this each week, and will also add links to other freeware and open-source/access plug-ins as we explore them. Please feel free to add as well, just make sure they are free :)
